What a week! I know we are all at different stages in out lives. Some of you might have little kids starting a new school year in person. Some of you might have big kids starting college and leaving home. Some of you may be recuperating from a busy summer and some of you still don't know what day it is!!! LOL The last one is me!
On Thursday I started to drive from Idaho to Arizona to officially wrap things up, move a storage shed and say good-bye to my kiddos and friends for awhile. I have officially accepted a job in Northern California and will be moving there next week! (Shhhh.... I haven't made it Facebook official yet.) I'm nervous and excited all at the same time! In the meantime, I'll be driving back to Idaho tomorrow and then packing everything I own up and driving to California next Sunday! Whew!
On my 13 hour drive, I listened to one book and 5000 podcasts. 🤣😂🤣 The book that I listened to on the way down was called, "Decluttering At The Speed Of Life" by Dana White. She talks about a clutter threshold and that totally resonated with me and I wanted to share with you my thoughts.
Your home can only contain so much stuff before it starts spilling out of the doors and windows. I know, kind of extreme. You know what I mean though. Our bedroom closet starts to overflow into the guest bedroom closet. Our kitchen starts to overflow into a storage room and garage. The garage starts to overflow into a shed in the back yard.... The list goes on and on.
A visual example is a hydroflask. You can only put so much water into a hydroflask before it starts to overflow and can't hold anymore. Our homes are the same way. If we buy, accumulate, receive and buy some more and never declutter.... it will start to overflow as well. I believe more and more everyday our homes were made to live in, not store stuff in.
Last year, I downsized from 1700 SQ FT to 300 SQ FT! Talk about a different container size!! YIKES! The picture above is my home. It has limited closet space, limited cupboard space and VERY limited storage space! I only kept the things I absolutely loved and was going to use. I also follow the strict "1 in 1 out" rule! I've decluttered several times in the last year because stuff I thought I would use was not getting used! Hence, why I am so passionate about decluttering!
Not only do I have a smaller container, I also have a weight limit! My tiny home on wheels, Elle💖🚍🚌 , can only safely carry so much stuff as we travel down the road. This made downsizing and decluttering so much easier for me. It was about safety!
What if your home/container had a clutter threshold?
What if, for your safety, your home could only carry so much stuff?
Would it make it easier to get rid of the stuff you didn't really love?
Would you be more selective of the items that got to stay in your home?
Would it be easier to declutter?
Interesting thought right!?! So....
Here's your assignment for the week! As you find a space to declutter this week, have the mentality that you can only keep what fits in the space. Here's an example. Say you are cleaning out your sock drawer. How many socks do you have? 10 - 30?😉 How many days of the week are there? 7 How often do you do laundry? Once a week? Twice a week? Let's say you do laundry once a week and you generally wear one pair of socks each day. You would only need 7 pairs of socks. Why do you keep more than that? That is the question I want you to start answering for yourself. "Why do I have so many of ______???"
