This week I wanted to share with you my thoughts on changing our state to create more balance in our life.
Before the pandemic, I was going 100 mph. I was working 50 - 60 hours a week, trying to be the best leader as possible in an ever changing work environment and a new boss, trying to be the best church leader to a bunch of 12 -18 year old girls, trying to be a good mom, trying to be a good friend, trying to support my 40 health coaching clients, picking up decorating jobs on the weekends AND... trying to take care of me. I was EXHAUSTED!
And then the pandemic hit and the world stopped! Literally stopped! Work stopped and I worked from home. Church was cancelled. Nobody was leaving their homes. My health clients started cancelling their programs because they didn't know if they would have jobs and nobody was decorating their homes! I was stuck at home with myself!!! Talk about opposite.
Any yet, I welcomed it! I needed a change of state and I think most people welcomed the slowness at the beginning. People started having dinners at home with their families. Sidewalks were being decorated by colored chalk. People were taking walks outside and riding bikes together. We slowed down when the world slowed down.
We usually see opposites as positive or negative. I want to offer you a different perspective. What if opposites actually provided us choice to allow us to use our agency and provided us balance. Our bodies need both + and -.
When we try to act against the opposite, we usually fail. Look at my example. If I continued to run 100 mph, I was going to burn out.... and I was close! The slowness created space for me to think about what I really wanted and make an intentional choice to change my state! That is exactly what I did.... I changed my state to bring balance into my life again. Balance was restored!
This week, I want you to look at where you have opportunity to change your state and create more balance in your life.
If you are "plugged in" all day, "unplug" and put down the electronics.
If you are indoors all day, take a walk outside.
If you have been around people (or on Zoom meetings) all day, give yourself some solitude.
If you are sitting all day, get up and walk around.
Change Your State!
Get creative! Even smalls changes can help bring balance back in place. The quickest way to change your state is to change your thoughts. When you are struggling with something, take a break and think about something else for a few minutes. If you are struggling with someone, change the thoughts you are thinking about them.
Remember when you were a kid and you had a nightmare? Our parents would come in and tell us to think about something happy or sing a song. We were "changing our state". I know, mind blown....
Some people are ready for a change of state again and would like the world to open up a bit again. People want to travel again. You might even hear some people say, "I just wish things would go back to normal." What they are really saying is they need a change of state again. It's all good! We can do this without the world changing anything. One think I know for sure is that a pandemic can be a catalyst for a change of state!
