The Motivational Triad.
Our primitive brain wants 3️⃣ main things! 1️⃣ - Seek Pleasure 2️⃣ - Avoid Pain 3️⃣ - Conserve Energy Your brain's job is literally to keep you alive and protect you at all cost! If you're feeling anxious, that doesn't feel good. That actually feels like suffering to your brain. Your brain is programmed to seek some pleasure and avoid that pain. And then, in order to conserve energy, it does the thing that worked last time you were feeling anxious. So if you've been going to food in anxious moments, that will be the first idea your brain will deliver to you to get out of that pain. This reinforces your neural pathway that "this is what we do (overeat) when we feel this way (anxious)." Of course you can insert any negative emotion here--stress, boredom, frustration, etc. The point is that--there is nothing wrong with you. Your brain is doing exactly what it was programmed to do. What if you were to: * Seek Growth vs Pleasure * Embrace discomfort vs Avoid pain * Pursue massive action vs Conserve energy If you want different results, you are going to have to do something different. The first step is just to be aware of your initial thoughts that your primitive brain offers you! No judgement! Just notice! Then ask yourself, is this how I want to respond and think?
